The Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre is a combination of theatre, museum, educational institute and a lead agency for the development and promotion of mask and puppet theatre in Scotland. Founded in 1981 by professional puppeteer, Malcolm Knight, it became a Charity Registered in Scotland in 1985 (SCO14379). SMPC houses a permanent exhibition of masks and puppets from its collections in the foyer and cafe area together with a reference library, audio-visual collection, book and gift shop. It also contains a series of production and design workshops including: Malcolm Knight's mask studio and puppet workshop; Grant Mason's film and special effects studio; and Kate Robinson's professional sculpture workshop; Sarah Lee's textile design room. There is also an educational training room and a dedicated woodcarving shop and store for masterclasses,courses and workshops for use by professionals, teachers and students.
The Centre offers the following services:
- year-round programme of Saturday Shows for visiting companies
- on site workshops and birthday parties for children and families
- professional touring exhibitions to UK and Ireland museums and galleries
- outreach workshops for schools, educational institutions, community organisations
- puppet therapy services to hospitals,social work venues, prisons and day-care centres
- professional craft commissions for theatres, films and television companies
- organises a bi-annual festival of European Folk Puppets
- supports and mentors new mask and puppet projects by Scottish companies
The Centre is also home to Personae-Mask and Puppet Books, an on-line web site with its own catalogue supplying publications to puppet centres, puppet festivals, puppetry training courses and puppet enthusiasts around the world:

This specialist arts centre is unique in the UK and renowned for its "hands-on" approach to creative projects and is dedicated to the promotion of mask and puppetry as an art form in its own right. It is a Council Member of Puppeteers UK, regional co-ordinator of the British Puppet & Model Theatre Guild, host to various Bristish UNIMA events, and holds the Presidency of The International Federation of Centres for Puppetry Arts.
